The City of Santa Monica is one of the most recognized communities and desirable destinations to live and work. Santa Monica is a complex full-service City with a population of 93,000, nearly 2300 employees with 11 bargaining units and a $737.9 million FY2017-18 operating budget. The Human Resources Department has a budget of $5 million and 27 staff members.
Reporting to the City Manager, the CPO is a member of the City’s Executive Team and serves as the Secretary to the City’s Personnel Board. The CPO is the City’s chief strategist, visionary, advisor and champion around all things people and is responsible for leading the Human Resources team in delivering exceptional labor relations; recruitment and selection; classification and compensation; and training services.
The City is a creating a model of 21st Century government and the ideal candidate will be an experienced HR leader with a forward thinking, collaborative approach to managing talent in the public sector and a successful track record of effectuating organizational change. Candidates who are out of the box thinkers, empathetic listeners, politically astute, people centric with strong interpersonal, collaboration and consensus building skills and driven by customer service will be successful.
Candidates must possess a BA/BS degree with a master’s degree being preferred, and a minimum of ten years’ experience including three years of supervisory experience in a complex public sector or comparable environment.
